What to include in a resignation letter
Keep it short and clear: the date, your manager’s name, a sentence saying you are resigning from your role, your notice period and, if you know it, your last working day. You do not have to give a reason.
Address it to a named person when you can, and sign off “Yours sincerely”; for “Dear Sir or Madam”, the British convention is “Yours faithfully”. The tool does this for you.
Your notice period
Your contract sets your notice period. If it says nothing, the minimum is set by law: according to GOV.UK, you must give at least a week’s notice if you have been in your job for more than a month. Check your contract before you write.
You can ask to leave earlier. Your employer does not have to agree, so put the request in writing and keep the answer.
How to hand it in
Check whether your contract asks for notice in writing. Email your letter or hand it over in person, keep a copy, and ask your manager to confirm the date they received it: your notice runs from then.
After you resign
Your final pay should include any holiday you have built up and not taken. Once you leave, your employer gives you a P45, which your next employer will ask for.
